Eliza Virginia Scripps was a philanthropist and lived in La Jolla, California, with her sister, Ellen Browning Scripps.
Eliza, known by her middle name of Virginia, was born in 1852. She was the daughter of James Scripps and Julia Osborn. [1]
In 1920, Eliza applied for a U.S. Passport. In the application, she states her date and place of birth. Her 1908 passport had been destroyed in a house fire. She planned to visit Japan, China, Siam, Burma, India, Ceylon, Palestine, Egypt, Algeria, Greece, Italy, France, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, Netherlands, Belgium and Great Britain.[2]
She passed away in 1921 while visiting London.[3][4]

Woman Who Gave Liberally to Good Causes at La Jolla Succumbs in London, England
Miss E. Virginia Scripps of La Jolla, widely known for her charities and her work for civic beauty, is dead in a private hospital in London, England, according to cablegrams received yesterday by relatives here. Miss Scripps was on a tour of the world was taken ill at Cairo, Egypt, several weeks ago, and went to London, where she had many friends.
She had been accompanied on her tour by Mrs. f. W. Kellogg, wife of the publisher of the Los Angeles Express and the Pasadena Post; Miss Caroline MacAdam, a teacher in the Bishop's school at La Jolla, and several young girl students from the school. Mrs. Kellogg was a niece of Miss Scripps and was with her when death came.
Miss Scripps was born at Rushville, Ill., Oct. 10 1852. She lived there 29 years and then came to the Pacific coast. For the last 20 years she had lived with her sister, Ellen B. Scripps, at La Jolla.
Miss Scripps was well known in La Jolla as one of its most public spirited citizens. She and her sister gave large sums toward the community playground and the Episcopal church there. They were the sponsors of the Bishop's school for girls, which has a national reputation.
Surviving Miss Scripps are two brothers, E. W. Scripps, the newspaper publisher, and Fred. T. Scripps, of Pacific Beach and a sister, Ellen B. Scripps of La Jolla.
Members of the family here said last night that the body probably would be cremated in London and the ashes sent here for funeral services.
