Biography

William Lanis Jennings was born at Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. He is the son of William Navarre Jennings and Sarah Ann Hicks. His siblings are Cortez Hicks Jennings, Bishop Worth Jennings, and Eleanor Hicks Jennings Rinebold.

William, known as Will, was educated in the public schools of Wilkes-Barre, Keystone Academy, Factoryville, PA, Wyoming Seminary, Kingston, PA, the Chamberlain Institute of Cattaraugus County, New York, and Riverside Seminary, Wellsville, New York.

In 1881, Will worked at his father's sawmill near Bradford, McKean County, PA, for nearly one year. In April, 1882, still sixteen years-old, he sought employment with Cortez and B. Worth Jennings at the new Jennings Brothers Company mill near Bernice, Sullivan County, PA. Will learned the business at every level. He continued to work for his brothers after they reestablished larger mills at Lopez, Sullivan County, PA. He worked for the company until well after 1900. Will was never made a partner in Jennings Brothers Lumber Company. At Lopez, Will was foreman and a superintendent of one of the Jennings Brothers' three mills. Will was elected president of the Lopez School Board in1897, and later, he served as the board secretary. He belonged to the I. O. O. F. and the K. O. T. M. organizations. When Jennings Brothers established Jenningston, West Virginia, in 1905, Will relocated to Jenningston to work for his brother, Worth Jennings. He later lived and worked in several locations, including Meadville, Pennsylvania, and Warren, Ohio. He was a retired stationary engineer at the time of his death. He visited his parents at Wilkes-Barre, and his brothers' families at Towanda, PA.

Will married Fidelia Agnes Myers in Wyoming County, PA, on 22 January 1889. He is the father of William Hicks Jennings, Victoria Myers Jennings Brown, Florence Myers Jennings, and Cortez Myers Jennings.

Years after the death of Fidelia, Will married Emila "Sadie" Spence. The two lived in Warren, Trumbull County, Ohio. Will died there, in 1943, and he is interred at Vaughn Cemetery, Mehoopany, PA.
