Biography

Albert was born in 1841 in Brede, Sussex, England. He was the son of Thomas Bryant and Mary Ann Luck. In 1851 he immigrated with his mother, step-father Paul Crouch (Thomas passed away in 1842) and numerous siblings to the United States. They initially settled in Herkimer County, and Albert received his naturalization papers there in 1862. He married Josephine Hubbard in 1866 in Amboy, Oswego, NY and they lived in Amboy, where he farmed, near his older brother Henry, until approx 1879. He then moved his family to Potter County, Pennsylvania where two other brothers and a sister had already settled. There he worked in a local tannery. Josephine and Albert had 5 known children together. He passed away in 1900 in a hospital in Buffalo, NY from Bright's disease (a kidney disease).

  • Obituary transcript, (copy of obituary in the papers of Dora Whaley Bryant, wife of a son of the Harry Bryant mentioned in this article): Exact date and newspaper unknown, believe it to be from Oswayo, PA where Albert had lived: In Memoriam Tribute to the Memory of the Late Albert R. Bryant Albert R. Bryant, whose life's mission closed Oct. 2 1900, at the General Hospital, Buffalo, NY where he was taken just one week before for medical treatment (but that dread Bright's disease had so nearly completed its work that medical skill and loving care could not check its course), and as the evening shades were falling the spirit left the frail body to try the realities of the great unknown. He was born to Thomas and Mary Bryant, March 15, 1842, near Sussex, Eng., and with his mother, two brothers and two sisters, came to this country when he was only five years of age. They settled in Herkimer Co., NY. He was married to Josephine Hubbard at Oswego, N.Y., Jan. 3, 1866, and to them five children were born. Ida, now Mrs. L. M. Smith, and Emma of this village, George H. of Massena, and Ray W., of Buffalo, N.Y. survive him. Besides his wife and children he leaves to mourn his death two brothers, Harry of Amboy, N.Y. and William C. of this village. The funeral was held at the Methodist Episcopal Church, Rev. J. F. Bennett officiating. For his text he used a question which the deceased asked him a few weeks before his death: "If a man die, shall he live again?" Job 14:14. He was a kind neighbor and honest and upright in all his dealings with his fellow men. Having lived in this village for the past twenty-one years, he will be greatly missed by his large circle of friends and acquaintances. The members of this family wish, through the columns of the RECORD, to express their thanks and appreciation for the many acts of kindness and assistance shown them in this trying hour. [Note by Katie Cooper Bryant: Albert is an infant in the 1841 Census in England, so his birth year must have been 1841 and not 1842. He actually came to the United States in 1851 when he was 10 years old, not 5.]
