Biography

Born 1340 and died 26 juli 1405 not 1500. Antonio Arcioni, also called Archeoni or Archionio, was born in the Monti district of Rome, in the palace visible from the Quirinale, where the baths of Constantine were (now abt. Via Quattro Novembre, 94, Roma).

He was educated in ecclesiastical life by Pope Urbano VI. After his role as Abbot of Abbey Montecassino, Pope Urban VI appointed him Bishop of Aquino in 1380. From Bishop of Aquino he became Bishop of Ascoli on February 6, 1387. There he held a synod, where he made several laws to discipline the clergy and people.

He wanted to own Castello della Croce in Ascoli and was recalled by the Church. Bonifacio IX gave him the high office of bishop of Arezzo in Tuscany on October 10, 1390, which did not come to fruition because the Florentines had appointed Angelo Ricasoli to that office. He therefore returned to Ascoli in 1399 and was elected as Vicar.

Antonio Arcioni was given control of the area between Castel Gandolfo and Marino. Elsewhere it is described that Odone Arcioni received half of a piece of land between Castel Gandolfo and Marino, from Pope Bonifacio IX on 18 May 1399.

On October 21, 1400, Antonio was appointed Vicar of the Pope in Rome. Vicar Antonio retained this position for 5 to 6 years. Innocenzo VII succeeded Bonifacio IX in 1404. Antonio was made a cardinal by the pope on June 12, 1405, with the title Cardinal-Bishop of San Pietro in Vincoli [1].

He died on July 26, 1405, and was buried in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore [2] before the altar of St. Girolamo. The stone is decorated with an epitaph (memorial plaque) in verse.

Quem pia Romuleo genuit natura favori Tegmine Cardineo dedit hoc Antonius Artus Huic apice evecto, sacrique ad Vincula Petri Semper....us Vrbis solamen amicum Lumine ut extinxit, terra germana profundo Spiritus hospitum mundi melioris adivit ANNO DOMINI MCCCCV. MENSIS IVLII DIE XXVI. OBIIT ANTONIVS CARDINALIS DE ARCHEONIBVS.

Freely translated: The loyal father of the pious Romans; he brought the house of Cardinals together in a strong bond; to his ideal example, the holy known Peter; always a comfort to a friend and the city; that the light went out; in the land of sincere deep service; your mind went to a better world; in the year of the Lord 1405, June 26, Cardinal Antonius de Archeonibus.

He had the reputation of being an excellent ecclesiastical administrator, learned, prudent, and agile.
