Biography

Born about 1425 John was the eldest lawful so of Alexander (Alaster cam) Forbes of Brux and his wife Katherine Cameron heritrix of Brux.

John Forbes was noted for his "sleick hair" and was also called the white Laird,

John Forbes married Elizabeth Gordon, daughter to Alexander Gordon of Cairnburrow, They had issue of four daughters:

  • 1st mar. William Forbes of Davan
  • 2d mar. John Forbes of Cluny
  • 3d mar. William Forbes of Terpersie
  • 4th mar. Symon Grant;

On the death of his father he gained the title of Brux.

On 7 May 1439, a Procuratory of Resignation was made by John Scot of Achenisy constituting Sir Alexander Seton, lord of Gordon, SirAlexander Forbes of that ilk and Sir Alexander Irvine of Drum, John Forbes of Brux, James Skene of that ilk, Andrew Buchan and James Garviach, squires; Gilbert Menzies, John Vaus and Duncan Clat, burgess of Aberdeen, his procurators to resign to his superior lord Sir Alexander Seton of Tullibody, and forester of Ayne and Boyne, spouse of Egidia Hay, daughter and heir to John Hay, late lord of Tullibody and of said forests, his lands of Achenisy. An Indenture of friendship, manrent, and maintenance was agreed in 1467 between William, Lord Forbes, Sir Alexander Forbes of Pitsligo, Alexander Forbes of Tolquhon, Arthur of Forbes, and John of Forbes of Brux, on the one part, and Duncan Macintosh, captain of Clanchattan, Hugh Rose, baron of Kilravock, etc., on the other part. At Aberdeen on 30 Oct 1496 by a charter of the earl of Mar, John Forbes of Brux sold to his nephew John Forbes, brother-german of William Forbes of Towie, of the half of his lands of Brux, and of the whole of his lands of Glencarvy, Glonconry, and Orde, In May 1497 King James IV as tutor of his brother John, earl of Mar, confirmed the charter of sale [3]
