Biography

Incorrect Connection of Mary Savage of Boston to George Hand of Cape May

There is no evidence Mary Savage of Boston married George Hand, Jr. He names a wife Mary in his will. George Hand, Junior, wrote his will 30 Nov 1748 naming wife Mary and his children. Brother Thomas Hand was executor, with wife Mary. Witnesses were Daniel Hand, Edward Church, Nathan Hand.[1]

His wife was more likely a member of one of the Cape May families at the time than this Boston man.

  • How was she supposed to get from Boston to Cape May, and why? With whom? On her own at this time? There's no way.
  • Only sources for the connection are unsourced findagrave and familysearch profiles.
  • FamilySearch actually no longer links his wife as Mary "Savage" she is now Mary "Stratton". Again, no sources, and almost certainly bogus.

He was probably a member of the Boston Latin School in 1669, and on 21 Apr. 1679 he took the oath of allegiance. He joined the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company in 1682. He was one of the executors of his father's will. By occupation he was an upholsterer, but seems to have taken no part in the public life of Boston.
