Andrew Freeman was born about 1695. He was the son of John Freeman and Susanna Rayner of Shotley, Suffolk, England. According to Quaker church records and descriptions of the men, both were cordwainers in Shotley, Suffolk, England.[1] Andrew's father John Freeman died in 1705, before he was old enough to enter apprenticeship.
In 1713, Andrew Freeman was apprenticed to George Skinner, a shoemaker from Din, Suffolk.[2]

In 1724, Andrew took his first apprentice cordwainer, nephew Peter Cross.[3] At that time, cordwainers were members of trade guilds. A cordwainer made shoes from fine leather imported from Cordova, Spain.[4]
