Member, Virginia State Senate. Delegate, Virginia secession convention. Studied at William and Mary and Univ. of Virginia. High Sheriff, Fauquier Co. VA 1767, and superintendent of Lord Fairfax's Estate. Lieutenant during French & Indian War, member of 1776 Virginia Convention declaring independence. Organizer of Culpepper Minute Men during Revolutionary War, served at Valley Forge under General George Washington. Succeeded to General Hugh Mercer's command when Mercer was killed at the Battle of Germantown. He fought at the Battle of Brandywine where he commanded the third Virginia Regiment, having a horse shot out from under him during battle. Thomas moved to Kentucky before it became a state; he was a prominent land owner and was a member of the Virginia Legislature representing what is now Kentucky in 1787.
