Biography

John Christian Wahrmund (according to his tombstone) was born 30 September 1792. In about 1821, he married Wilhelmine Christine Meyer in Wiesbaden, Germany. According to the passenger list of ship Talisman, he departed from an unknown port in Germany in 1845 and arrived at an unknown port in Texas 02 January 1846, along with sons Philip Ludwig (Louis), William and Emil. Their "originating town" is shown as Wiesbaden. From looking at the rest of the passenger list, it appears that only the head of a family, or adult males, are listed. Hence, we do not see thirteen-year-old son Karl on the list, nor do we see William's wife or his oldest son, though the 1850 census says William's first child was born in Germany. We also do not find Christian's wife on the list, though one source suggests she died in 1848. If that is the case, she died in Texas, though the place of her death and burial is unknown.

It doesn't appear that John Christian ever filed for U.S. Citizenship, though his sons did. In 1846, he is listed as owning lots #170 & 461 in the town of Fredericksburg. By 1851, John and his family were living and farming along Bear Creek in Gillespie County. Between 1852 and 1866, a large stone house was built on the site. The house still stands today, and is a designated Texas Historic site. The marker on the house, located at 575 Buckeye Road in Fredericksburg, Texas, reads as follows:

The larger of the two houses on this property is original to the site and dates to the period of settlement by German immigrants in this part of Texas. Johann Christian Wahrmund brought his family to Texas in 1846 and by 1851 they were living on this tract of land along Bear Creek. The original portion of the stone house was built between 1852 and 1866. Prussian immigrant Johann Priess bought the house from the Wahrmunds in 1866, and his family enlarged it during the 1870s and 1880s. The house remained under Priess ownership until 1931. Johann died August 12, 1868, at the age of 75 years, in Fredericksburg, Gillespie county, Texas and is buried in the Der Stadt Friedhof Cemetery, also known as City Cemetery, Fredericksburg City Cemetery. ^[1]
