Sidney M Spiegel was an American businessman. Spiegel was an officer in the family mail-order business which was known for its iconic Spiegel Catalog.
Sidney was born in Chicago, Cook, Illinois, United States, 16 Aug 1872. Son of German immigrant, Joseph Spiegel, and Matilda Liebenstein. [1]
When the second generation, Sidney and his brother Modie Spiegel entered the family business, they revived and expanded the business by establishing installment credit to compliment the cash sales. They were pioneers in the installment credit business. Due to this generation of brothers, Spiegel exemplified creative marketing and salesmanship while capitalizing early on the mail-order trend and introducing the innovative concept of installment credit to the mail-order industry. On March 11, 1896, Sidney Spiegel married Maud Kohn in Chicago, Illinois. [3]
Sidney M. Spiegel died on December 19, 1940, in Winnetka, Illinois.[4][5] He was buried at Rosehill Cemetery and Mausoleum, Chicago, Illinois.[1]
