Biography

José was born in 1927. He was Paraguayan poet who had also studied law. He also taught literature and history at the Ateneo Paraguayo (Atheneum of Paraguay) and at the National University. He belonged to the poetry group that calls itself Academia Universitaria del Paraguay. Appleyard was awarded the First Prize in Poetry in 1943 and the Municipal Poetry Prize of Asunción in 1961. He is an aesthetic and nostalgic poet, with an oeuvre firmly rooted in the Paraguayan land and culture. He passed away in 1998.
