Maria Bernhardina was born at Allmänna barnbördshuset in Stockholm 21 May 1841, to an anonymous, unmarried mother, 30 years old. She was baptized at the maternity hospital 25 March.[1]
Maria Bernhardina was the daughter of Maria Helena Nylin, which is confirmed by her appearance in the estate inventory of her uncle and foster father Jacob Nylin (1801-1867).[2] At the time of Maria's conception her mother had been a housekeeper for mayor Salomon Rubin (1794-1867) in Lindesberg, who was at the time a widower.
In October 1841 Maria Nylin came from Stockholm to Sorunda parish to serve as housekeeper for Baron Bror Brändström at Lundby.[3] At the same time Maria's daughter, Maria Bernhardina was installed in foster care with the foreman Johan Lindquist at Lundby. He and his wife Maria Christina Pehrsdotter already had two older foster children. For some reason Maria Bernhardina is in the books with the surname of her foster father, while the other two children have different surnames.[4][5]
In 1847 Maria Bernhardina Lindquist is recorded as a foster daughter with tailor master Jacob Nylin and his wife Christina in the quarter Pyrenæus (Stora gråmunkegränd) in Gamla Stan. At this time they also had another foster child.[6][7] In 1852 there is only one foster daughter with Jacob Nylin and his wife: Maria Bernhardina, now with the surname Rubin (the name of her biological father).[8] Maria Bernhardina is surnamed Rubin in the next record as well.[9][10]
In 1857 we find former tailor master Jacob Nylin in Maria parish with his wife and foster daughter Maria.[11][12] In November 1863 the little family arrived to live in Kungsör. Here Maria Bernhardina appears with the surname Nylin (the name of her mother and of her uncle/foster father).[13][14] Maria Bernhardina's foster father uncle died in December 1867.
Maria Bernhardina married the wholesale merchant Reinhold Fredrik Cleve 19 April 1868 and moved to Stockholm.[15][16]
The Cleve's lived in Klara parish, in the quarter Lammet.[17] They moved several times within Stockholm and had three children.
Maria Bernhardina Cleve (born Nylin) was widowed in April 1889. In 1892 she moved to Dalhyddan in Huddinge with three of her youngest children.[18] Later, in 1897, when she came to Strängnäs, she came from Hedvig Eleonora parish. After a year she moved to Kungsör.[19]
Widow Maria Bernhardina Cleve, born Nylin lived in Kungsör from November 1898 to November 1905, when she moved to Flen.[20][21][22]
Widow Maria Bernhardina Cleve, born Nylin, died 12 May 1912.[23]
