Biography

William Abbott was the son of Benjamin Abbott and his wife, Elizabeth Reynolds. He was born in Eye, Suffolk, United Kingdom in 1844. He emigrated to New Zealand with his father.^[1] He bought land and was resident in Tadmor, Nelson, New Zealand. He lived in a hut he had built on his land.^[2] He passed away sometime during 1863.^[3] He was last heard of on 31 January 1862. His "uncle" (actually his father)^[4] Benjamin Abbott advertised for news of him in April 1863.^[5] William's skeleton was found at the foot of a cliff in Motueka Valley in October 1869. He was identified from the clothing and gun that were found nearby.^[6][7]
