Menso Heijdenrijck was baptized as an infant on 9 February 1644 at Willibrordi cathedral in Wesel, Germany.[1] His parents were were Johan Antony Heidenryk and Drieske Honnerts. His father died when he was a young child, and the family moved to Harderwijk. Menso and his brother Antonij studied together at Harderwijck.[2]
A contemporaneous biography of Menso[3] details his life in the Netherlands as a student and pastor for the Dutch Reformed Church. It states that he was married twice, first to Johanna Catharina van der Beek and then to Aletta van Hensbergen; he had five children with Aletta (with 3 surviving past his death). It also reveals that Menso passed away in Maastricht on 12 October 1724, which is corroborated by the index of burial records.[4]
Surviving Dutch records support the following:
A letter was sent to the Council of State from Menso, which pertained to the South Holland Synod's duty to find a new preacher for Maastricht.[5]
Menso was a preacher in Klimmen from 1668-1673, when the French forced him to leave.[6]
Menso Heidenrijck married Aletta van Hensbergen in Spring 1706.[7][8]
Through his father, Menso is possibly a descendant of the Westphalian House of Plettenberg.
Johanna Maria Heijdenrijck was the daughter of Menso and Aletta, though she is sometimes recorded as his sister.[17] (See Johanna's profile for a detailed explanation).
