Biography

Benjamin was born about 1691. He passed away about 1756.

Benjamin Stokes of Boston, “Miller” the estate on Prince Street. Benjamins Estate was taxed 1756 - His will was made Feb. 3, 1749 - 50 and was proved November 15, 1756. Benjamin devised to his wife Hannah, one third personal and one third income of real during life; residue to daughter Rebecca; witnesses, Oliver Williams, James Osborn. Owen Harris. Inventory: one half mills(Charlestown Mill) and lands $7000; house and 32 acres, bo’t of Phipps, $2400; house in Boston, Prince Street, $1200; total 15,774, or $2103. Benjamin bo’t in lifetime, Robert Temple, one half house, one half of 4 acres, 3-16 of Mills, 3-16 of 1 acre of marsh, 3-16 of town rights. Widow Temple and her son convey to Stokes exrs., John Gould and W. Paine, the same, reserving one third to his widow Hannah, 1757 - Admin, de bonis non granted to Thomas Adams, April 4, 1787

Boston Post; Date: 1757-01-10 Page 2 - This was the Boston Newpaper To be held by publick Vendue in Charlestown, at the house of Mr. Benjamin Stokes, Miller, deceased, on Thursday the 14th current at Three of the Clock in the Afternoon, the household furniture of the said deceased, together with his stock of grain now in the Mills, which will be put up by larger or smaller quanties as the Purchasers shall have occasion for.

History of the Charlestown Tide Mills - In a deed date 1693 they are described as the Grist Water Mill commonly called or known by the name of Charlestown Mill, and in a deed given in 1732.

Classified Ad in the Boston Evening Post 1746/12/15 : A Parcel F Choice Wheat belonging to the Government to be sold for the Benefit of the Inhabitents of the Province not more than Twenty nor less than Five Bushels in a Parcel. Private Families and others may be supplied at Twenty Seven Shillings Old Tenor, Per Bushel by appling to Messieurs Stoakes and Paine at the Norh Mills Boston.

From The History of Westminster Massachusetts: His gd.f., (Daniel Munjoy) Benjamin Stokes, was a wealthy citizen of Charlestown, owning lands and houses there, and a tidemill.

Benjamin was a member of Christ Church in the North End of Boston, he was of many people who donated money for the church bells.
