Lars August was born in Sunne parish 20 April 1796 to Herr Lars Bernhard Bergnehr, captain at Bergs Kompani, and his wife, Fru Maria Theresia Hallman.[1]
Captain L. Aug. Bergnehr came from Stockholm to Sundsvall in 1826 with his wife since 16 August 1826, Greta Lovisa Spångberg and the girl Fredrica Rosalie (1821 - daughter of his wife). The family went back to Stockholm in 1827.[2] Daughter Selma Gurli was born before their return.
1842 to 1843 the family lived in Malmö, where Lars August Bergnehr was a major with the coast guards, appointed by the customs administration.[3] His appointment was criticized in Skånska Correspondenten as an example of the general appointment system, where persons without experience from customs surveillance were placed as guardians of our coast.[4]
When the family returned to Stockholm they lived in Klara parish at least until 1852.[5]
In 1855 Lars August Berghnér lived by himself in Jakob & Johannes.[6] By this time he was divorced from Greta Lovisa Spångberg.
In 1855-1856 L.A. Bergnehr was involved in an affair appearing in the newspaper over several months: he had taken a substantial sum of money from a young liutenant on Gotland in order to buy him a position in the customs office in Stockholm. Bribes like this were of course not legal - but in this case the money never even reached the intended recipient in the Customs Office, but was kept by Bergnehr. The defrauded liutenant reported Begnéhr to the police. This was when the first article was published in Folkets Röst. The police matter was "cleared up" by the Director General of Customs, who convinced the liutenant to withdraw his complaint and make a settlement in private. Bergnehr, who was evidently going through personal bankruptcy at the time, counterattacked by suing the newspaper where the story first appeared. The outcome of the longdrawn affair is not quite clear. It seems that bribes for getting appointments with the Customs Office had been common gossip knowledge for a long time, although hard to prove. It also seems that the practice ceased (for a time) as a result of this affair. However, the Supreme Court denied the admissibility of the testimonies given about Bergnéhr's dirty affairs, since he was the plaintiff, not the accused in the case against Folkets Röst.[7][8][9][10][11]
Major Lars August Berghnér married Josefina Charlotta Bäck 20 October 1863 and moved out from Stockholm.[12]
When Lars August Bergnehr died 23 February 1875, he lived in Håbo-Tibble parish with his wife.[13]
