DEATH OF VERY EARLY COLONIST
(Per Press Association.) Christchurch, July 4. Last week there passed away at Dampiors Bay, West Lyttelton, one of New Zealand's oldest colonists in the person of Richard Augustus Eaton. Mr Eaton was born at Lutley Mill, Halesowen, Birmingham, England, in the year 1828, and came out to New Zealand in the ship Oriental, landing in Wellington in 1840. He served in the Maori wars, and during, his: stay in the North Island put with a great many hardships. In. 1860 he came to Lyttelton, and was one of the band of workers employed in the construction of the tunnel. He also took a prominent part in building the eastern breakwater. [1]
