Biography

Clara was born in 1871 [* See NOTES below], the first child of John S Meiser and Mary Jane Luck. She was enumerated, age 9, in her parents' household at the time of the 1880 Census.[1]

In 1890, when she was about 19 years old, she married James H Diemer in Freeburg, Pennsylvania.[2] James and Clare had at least two children:

  1. Claire Diemer (1892-1900)
  2. James Russel Diemer (1902) m Martha Guyer (1925)

The 1900 Census locates the family in Franklin Township, Snyder County, Pennsylvania, with the household consisting of James H (May 1868, 32), Clara (Jan 1871, 29), and daughter Claire (Dec 1892, 7). James was a foreman for the railroad. They had been married 9 years, had 1 child, and they owned their house, free and clear.[3] Before 1910, the family relocated to Selinsgrove where they were renting a house on S High Street. James H (41) and Clara (39) had been married 19 years and had 2 children, with one, Russel J (8), living and in the home. James was employed as a railroad repairman.[4]

They remained in the same house through the next ten years, for the 1920 Census shows them living in a rented house at #8 S High Street in Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania. The household consisted of James H (51), Clara (50), and James R (17). James is working as a track foreman for the railroad.[5] The 1930 Census shows James (62) and Clara (60) as empty nesters, having purchased a house at 316 N Market Street in Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania, that they valued at $8,000 (although they did not own a radio). James was employed as a foreman for a steam railroad company.[6]

Clara passed away in 1933 as a result of dislocating her back from falling down the stairs at her home.[7] She is buried at Glendale Cemetery in Snyder County, Pennsylvania.[8] Her obituary appeared in The Snyder County Tribune (Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania) on 13 July 1933.[9]

Research Notes and Inconsistencies

Clara's date of birth is more likely to be 4 January 1871, rather than the 4 Jan 1870 shown on her death certificate and grave marker. She was not in the 1870 Census with her parents (and she would have been, had she been born in January 1870), and she was age 9 on the 1880 Census. It reflects the 1870 date in only the 1920-1930 Census, on her death certificate (informant was her husband, James), and thus on her grave marker.
