Biography

Birth

Both the 1875 Vilas genealogy and the 1916 Thompson genealogy say that Elizabeth S. Gorham was the daughter of John H. Gorham and Sarah (Smith) Gorham and was born on 26 Sep 1833.^[1][2] Neither cites a source, and the date conflicts with her age in multiple census records, which are themselves inconsistent. in 1850, she was living with her parents at Cleveland, Ohio, at the age of 19, with her birthplace shown as Connecticut.^[3] In 1860, she was living at Cleveland in her parents' household with her husband and two children, with her birthplace shown as Ohio and her age as 24.^[4] In 1870, she is living with her parents, husband, and two children at Cleveland, with her age given as 35 and her birthplace as Connecticut.^[5] In 1900, she was living with her husband and two children at East Orange, New Jersey, and the census says she was born in Connecticut in September 1837.^[6] Her gravestone says she was born in 1830.^[7] The death certificate of her son Malcolm Gorham Vilas says that his mother was born at New Haven, Connecticut.^[8]

Death

Elizabeth S. Vilas died at East Orange, New Jersey, on 23 Apr 1902. An entry in the New Jersey Death Index says that Elizabeth Vilas died in 1902.^[10] A transcript of a death notice from an unknown source on her FindAGrave site says that she died at East Orange on 23 Apr 1903 (but the memorial says, incorrectly, that she died on 23 Apr 1905). Her partially sunken gravestoneat the Woodland Cemetery in Cleveland, Ohio, is inscribed with the dates 1830-1902.^[7]
