Calvin Waller Burnett was an African-American artist, illustrator and educator. [1]
Calvin was born July 18, 1921 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, son of N Lowe Burnett and Addie Waller Burnett. [2]
He graduated from Massachusetts School of Art in 1942 and received a Master’s Degree in Fine Arts from Boston University in 1960. Calvin taught at many institution in northeastern United States including Massachusetts College of Art and the DeCordova Museum. He was a professor at the Massachusetts College of Art for 33 years until his retirement in 1985.
A well-known Boston artist, Mr. Burnett specialized in printmaking, illustration and painting. His work is in collections at the Smithsonian, Museum of Fine Arts, Museum of African-American History and Boston Public Library, as well as in many private collections.
He married Judith "Torrey" Milligan in 1960 and had one daughter Elizabeth (Toby) Burnett.
Calvin died in Medway, Massachusetts on October 8, 2007.[3]
