George Crowther was born in 1821 and was the son of John Crowther and Eleanor Howe.
George married Elizabeth Manners in the village of Merrington on 15 July 1839 and they had ten children. The marriage entry describes her father as a "corver" which is someone who makes coal baskets.[1]
On the 1841 census, George, a coal miner, and Elizabeth are living in Bishop Middleham with their daughter, Margaret, aged 1 year.[2]
On the 1851 census, George, a coal miner, and Elizabeth are living in Ferryhill with their children: John (8 years), William (6 years), George (3 years) and Eleanor (1 year). The eldest daughter, Margaret, is visiting her grandparents. Another son, William, born in 1847, died in infancy but the same name was given to the next son who was born in 1853. George's brother, Ralph, aged 17 years, is also living with them.[3]
On the 1861 census, George, a coal miner, and Elizabeth are living in Little Chilton with their children: John (19 years), George (13 years), Ellen (11 years), William (7 years), Mary (5 years) and Thomas (2 years). A son, Ralph, born in 1855, died in infancy.[4]
On the 1871 census, George, a colliery labourer, and Elizabeth are living in Little Chilton with their children: William (18 years), Mary (15 years), Thomas (13 years), Simpson (8 years) and Elizabeth (5 years).[5]
