Biography

Flag of Wiltshire (adopted 2009)
John Goodfellow was born in Teffont Evias, Wiltshire, England.

Birth and Parentage

Andrews’ and Dury’s Map of Wiltshire, 1773.[1]

John Goodfellow, the son of Henry Goodfellow and his wife, Mary, née Eatwell, was born on 5 November 1749 in Teffont Evias, Wiltshire, England.

Marriage and Family

St Editha's, Baverstock[2]

He married Anne Arnold, daughter of Robert Arnold and his wife Anne/Anna, in Baverstock, on 23 June 1774. [3][4][5]

Life

John Goodfellow continued to raise the living standards of his family.

On 27 July 1792 there was a

release by George Cross of Sutton Mandeville, yeoman, and Martha, his wife, to John Goodfellow of Teffont Evias, Gent., and Edward Bracher of Fovant, Gent., of right to estates in Sutton Mandeville. Consideration: £100.[6]

There was also, on 10 October 1795, an

assignment of the lease by Joh Goodfellow of Teffont Evias, Gent., Edward Bracher of Fovant, Gent., to George Cross, of Sutton Mandeville, of house and orchard for the term of ninety-nine years or three lives at the yearly rent of 6s 8d, paying heriot of 13s 4d. Consideration £47. [6]
Teffont Evias Manor[7]

In John Goodfellow's time, the manor of Teffont Evias was owned and occupied by John Thomas Mayne. [8][9]

Although his father Henry had first been a soldier and then a miller, John calls himself, in his last Will, a gentleman - (of no profession). By the time of his death he had invested in property in Dorset which he held freehold, as well as holding the copyhold and leasehold of other property in Wiltshire, and he no longer described himself as a miller, although he was residing at Teffont Water Grist Mill when he died.
