Biography

Obituary:

She was the youngest of 8 children born to Thomas and Hattie Hall. She grew up in the Badlands area of South Dakota where her parents were cattle ranchers. She was preceded in death by her sister, Mary Norman of Rapid City, S. D. and her brothers Archibald Hall of Los Angeles, Ca., Joseph Hall of Rapid City, S.D., and Lewis Hall of Shreveport, La. Three siblings died in childhood. She attended Chadron State Teacher's College in Nebraska and became a school teacher. While working a summer job at Yellowstone State Park, she met Rolf Hovey, a talented young man from Tioga, N. D. and the two discovered beautiful music together, quite literally. Caroline dreamed of becoming an opera singer and moving to New York City. She accepted Rolf's marriage proposal in New York City and the two married and moved to Berea, Ky. where Rolf had become a music professor at Berea College. During the war years Rolf served in the Army Air Corps and they were stationed in Montgomery, Alabama. Their first daughter, Helen Victoria was born in South Dakota in August of 1942. Their second child, Valerie Hall, was born in New York City in March of 1947. Their third child, a son, Bruce Ivar, was born in Berea in 1949. Rolf and Caroline were active in student life on the college campus, entertaining a number of students from around the world in their home and with the Cosmopolitan Club, volunteering at Union Church, singing in and directing the annual performance of The Messiah, directing the music for the outdoor production of Paul Green's Wilderness Road at Indian Fort Theatre and in later years spending sabbatical time in Oslo, Norway and Taipei, Taiwan and traveling all over the world.

Survived by four children including one-time actress Helen Hovey who died in 2009.

Interred in Berea Cemetery, Berea, Kentucky.
