James was Wampanoag.

James W. Denison, Jr. was a Native American. He was a member of the Herring Pond Wampanoag Tribe. In 1861, James and his family are listed on the Earle Report and living on Nantucket at the time.

About twenty men of color who identified Nantucket as their hometown served in the Union Navy and the Union Army (Massachusetts 5th Cavalry).

According to the research of Frank Dorman and Richard Miller, Isaac Barlow, Nathaniel Borden, Benajah Boston Jr., Oliver Boston, James W. Dennison (a Wampanoag originally from Cape Cod), Charles G. Godfrey Jr., George H. Gordon, William Hines, Andrew Johnson, John Lemon, Joseph W. Maxcy, Sampson Pompey, Joseph Simons, William Vose, Robert L. Whitfield, and Barzillai Williams served in the Union Navy. George Michael, Lewis Mills, and Hiram Reed served in the 5th Massachusetts Cavalry.[7]

  4. Is James W. Denison related to this family? Titus Denison was an enslaved African American who was emancipated by George Denison in Stonington in 1801. Titus appeared in Stonington's census in 1820, aged over 45, with four in his household. By 1830, he and his wife Sarah are enumerated in North Stonington in a household of two. The Eastern Pequot's overseer Ezra Hewitt paid Titus for keeping John Poheage in April 1834 and Moses Brushell in early January 1835 and 1843. Brown and Rose, Black Roots, 108.
