Note: Andrew Bomond, clerk, nephew of Hugh de Bernham, released also to Walter de Berney, Richard de Haylesdon, &c. all his right (to the lordship of Haylesdon) in the 51st of the said King Edward (25 January 1377-21 June 1377). The word "clerk" in the Middle Ages denoted a churchman, clergyman or ecclesiastic; a member of the five "minor orders" as distinct from higher or "holy orders". A clerk was a scholar, a person of book learning, able to read and write.
