Biography
Thomas Fagan was born about 1809. He was in the police force in Nelson for 17 years prior to his death and a serjeant major for the past 9 years.[1]
He purchased land in Mary Ann Street, Nelson on 10 February 1852.[2]
He married Helena.[3]
He died at Nelson Hospital on 16 August 1860[4] of disease of the heart aged 51.[5]
He bequeathed some of his property to his wife and instructed the sale of other property with the proceeds going to his siblings:
Sarah Holl
Ann Lyons
Edward Fagan
Elizabeth McCaul late Elizabeth Collins.[6]
In a codile he bequeathed the following collection, known as the Fagan Collection, to the Nelson Institute:
carved meare (mere?)

Chinese dirk
a greenstone axe head
three smaller stone axe heads
a greenstone boulder
a stone carving tool
four greenstone eardrops
a small piece of greenstone
a whale's tooth (left by Captain Cook with a native in Queen's Charlotte Sound)

six ivory eardrops
five blanket pins
jaw and tusks of wild boar
manuka fishhook
eight fishhooks various
two pieces fishing apparatus
shackle for a caw caw's legs
a large spear twisted
four smaller spears
two walking sticks
two tomohawks
and any other maori weapons or curiosities that might be found in or about my house or premises at the Port Nelson.[7] [8]
The Fagan collection was donated to Nelson Museum by the executors of Thomas's estate in 1862.[9]
