Biography

Elizabeth "Beth" Church Hoyt was born on 4 December 1862 in Newburgh, New York. Her parents were Enoch Renslow Rolfe Hoyt and Emily Ward Hancock.

She appears in the 1865 New York Census[1] and 1870 U.S. Census[2] (ages 2 and 7 respectively) living with her parents and sisters in Newburgh. Her father is said to be working as an Agent. Also in the household are a variety of boarders.

By 1880, the family had relocated to Brooklyn, New York. That year's census record lists Elizabeth Hoyt, age 17, living with her parents in the household of Dr. Lester and Mrs. Caroline Keep at 469 Vanderbilt Avenue.[3] Her father is listed as a Civil Engineer.

Beth Hoyt married Howard Colby Ives on 12 November 1890.[4] Their known children are:

She spent the next two decades supporting her husband as her pursued his career, first as a travelling insurance salesman and then as a Unitarian Minister. The Ives family lived in Williamstown, Massachusetts (1895-1900), Meadville, Pennsylvania (1900-1905), Cape Cod, Massachusetts (1905-1906), New London, Connecticut (1906-1910), and Summit, New Jersey (1910-1916).[13] While in Williamstown, Beth ran a boarding house called The Bardwell House.[14] Later, she became a professional photographer and sold her photographs, as well as arts, crafts, and baked goods, from their home.

In 1907, she and Howard adopted an orphaned 14-year-old boy whom they named Hoyt Ives - (1892-1917).[15]

In the early 1910s, Howard converted to the Baha'i Faith and left the church. Their marriage did not survive, and they were legally divorced on 20 October 1920.[16]

Mrs. Elizabeth Hoyt Ives, as she was now called, spent the last decade of her life travelling to and from the United Kingdom and Europe.[17][18][19] She died in Manhattan, New York on 10 March 1934[20] and is buried with two of her children at Green-Wood Cemetery, Brooklyn.[21]

Research Notes

There appears to be another woman named Elizabeth Hoyt Ives (wife of Arthur Stanley Ives) who also lived in New York and New Jersey during the 1920s and 30s. She may (or may not) be the same Mrs. Elizabeth Hoyt Ives who gave lectures on sex education on behalf of the Progressive Psychology Club of Greater New York in 1925. - Freeth-52 20:06, 8 December 2021 (UTC)
