Virginia was born on February 5, 1920, in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee. She was the daughter of Michael Gmeinweiser and Mary Tripp. She attended school up to the eighth grade.
Her mother passed away before she was ten years old.
In the 1930 census taken on April 2nd, Virginia was living at 524 Florence Street in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee, with her grandmother and father. Her grandmother rented their home for $10 monthly and her father worked as a house painter.[1]
Virginia married Barney Bailey on January 25, 1936, in Lawrence County. Their marriage was solemnized by A. T. Woodard.[2] He was the son of James Bailey and Ora Sandy. Together, they had two sons. Barney, Virginia, and their families moved to California later that year.
In the 1940 census taken on April 8th, Virginia was living at 111 Laurel Street with her husband and father. Barney rented their home for $10 monthly. Both her husband and her father were employed as laborers - Barney for the W.P.A. and Michael for farming - while she tended to the housework. Altogether, the family's salary was around $1100.[3]
Later in her life, Virginia worked as a saleswoman for Stanley Home Products.
Virginia passed away on October 3, 1990, in Visalia, California. She was buried in the Visalia Public Cemetery on October 6th.[4][5]
