Charlie was born in 1873 to Edward Cartwright and Sarah Perks in Salina, Kansas. In about 1900, they moved to Rocky Ford, Colorado where his father opened Cartwright's Restaurant.
In 1902, Charlie's father returned to Salina. Charlie replaced the restaurant with Cartwright's Racket Store. In 1904, he was selling souvenir china.
In 1902, Charlie married Pearle Shelton in Holbrook. They lived in Rocky Ford. In 1906, Pearle passed away in Rocky Ford.
In 1908, Charlie married Abbie Kingsbury in Salina, Kansas. They had at least one child.
In 1908, Charlie sold his store in Rocky Ford and opened an auto livery business in Colorado Springs. By 1911, he was running a automobile store in Rocky Ford.
He passed away in 1951 in Denver. He is buried in Rocky Ford.

J. C. Cartwright has gone on his wedding "tower." He and Miss Pearl Shelton were united in marriage last Wednesday noon at the home of the bride's parents in Holbrook. Rev. Wilson Mills was officiating clergyman. Just after the ceremony was concluded the Woodmen band arrived from Rocky Ford and serenaded the happy couple. A magnificent wedding dinner was served to a company of fully fifty guests. Later in the afternoon Mr. and Mrs. Cartwright were driven over to Sugar City, where they too the Missouri Pacific train for Salina, Ks. From there they were to go to Topeka, and thence to Iowa, returning by way of Kansas City. They will be gone about a month on the trip, after which they will take up their residence in Rocky Ford.

J. C. Cartwright yesterday unloaded a carload of Studebakers that had been ordered by prospective auto owners of Rocky Ford. In the consignment there were three four-cylinder and one six-cylinder cars.
