He was raised by his grandparents after his father married Ella Mae Adcock in 1919.
John appears in the 1930 census with his grandparents and older sister, living in the area around Fairfield and Shelbyville roads in rural Bedford County, Tennessee.[1]
After the death of his grandfather, John and his grandmother moved in with the family of his aunt, Virginia Hamilton. There, he worked as a laborer for his uncle's farm.[2]
John married Christine Uselton on August 17, 1940, in Moore County, Tennessee.[3] Together, they had six children: George, Francis, Nellie, Betty, Shirley, and Mary.
On October 16, 1940, John was registered in the World War II United States draft. He was described as being 5'6" and 140 lbs, with a light brown complexion, brown hair, and blue eyes.[4]
He passed away on December 19, 1969, and was buried in the Willow Mount Cemetery.[5]
Notes
John's WW2 draft card and headstone indicates that he was born in 1917. However, this cannot be the case with Nellie's death on May 10, 1917.
His projected age in census records, if born in December, would indicate that he was born in 1916.
