Hymie Weiss was a notorious Chicago gangster, the leader of the North Side Gang and a bitter rival of Al Capone, another gang leader. Hymie was gunned down by rival gangsters on 11 October 1926.[5,7]
Earl was born Henry Wojciechowski on 25 January 1898 in Chicago, Illinois, the son of William Wojciechowski and Mary Brzuszkiewicz.[1] His name was given in the 1900 census as Henry born in Illinois.[2] The Wikipedia treatment for Hymie says he was born in Russian Poland on the same date.[5] However, his father in at least one census says he came to America in 1886 and the birth is recorded in Illinois. His World War I draft registration is signed Earl J. Weiss with a birth date of 25 January 1897.[4] As noted on his father's profile, there are many discrepancies in the records for this whole family.
He passed away on 11 October 1926 in Chicago, a gunshot victim of a gang war.[3,5,6,8]
