Biography

Origins

Philip Coe was born about 1742. [1] His parentage and origins are currently unknown or not well documented.

Some family stories suggest that Philip was a Scots-Irish immigrant from Northern Ireland. As such, he may have settled in Albany, New York, or in Colerain, Massachusetts.[1] [He could have lived in both locations.] The Daughters of the American Revolution have apparently accepted Colerain (originally known as Boston Township No. 2)[2] as his birth place, although on what evidence is unknown.[3]

It has also been speculated that Phillip might be the only unidentified child of Benjamin Coe and his wife Rachel Prudden. Benjamin was born in New Jersey but later resident in southwestern Pennsylvania.[1] If Philip is his son, he would have been born in New Jersey, where all Benjamin's children were born.

Another suggestion is that Philip was of Native American descent.[1] Although the reason for the suggestion is unclear, it is not impossible.

Finally, some family stories suggest that he was born in Pennsylvania.[1] If so, there should be at least one other Coe family in (probably eastern) Pennsylvania in the 1740s.

Military Service

On 29 July 1780 Philip enlisted in the 5th company, 5th regiment, New York Line. He was a resident of Dutches County, New York. On 10 August 1781 he was transferred to the Invalid Regiment, where he served until his son Ichabod was able to serve as his subsitute.[1][3]

Marriages and Children

Philip is said to have married twice. His first marriage was to Barbara Neston. They were the parents of two known children:[1][3]

  • Ichabod Coe
  • James Coe

Philip's second wife is said to be Abigail O'Connor. According to descendants they were parents of :[1]

  • Isaac Newton Coe, b. May 1, 1777
  • Sarah
  • Rachel (twin)
  • Elizabeth (twin)
  • Hannah, m. Willialm Holdren[3] and settled in Washington Co., Ohio.
  • Philip, b. Sept. 21, 1784
  • Hester.
  • Jane
  • Paulina
  • Pamelia, m. Jacob Ogle.

Residence in Pennsylvania

In 1787 Philip was hired to cut timber for constructon of the Washington County, Pennsylvania Courthouse.[1]

On 1 March 1787 and 5 March 1796 Philip received grants of land in Washingon County totaling 300 acres.[1]

In the 1790 US Census for Washington County, Philip is listed as the head of a household that included two males under sixteen, and four females.[1]

Philip died 8 May 1818. in what was then Ohio County, Virginia, Moundsville (today Moundsville Marshall County, West Virginia).[1][3]

Research Note

Philip's Find A Grave Memorial[4] gives his birth place as Providence, Providence County, Rhode Island, USA, without any explanation or documentation. There is also a note on the Memorial that says an "unknown member in 2010" claimed that "Philip Coe was born Philip Sisco and changed his name to Coe during the American Revolution", but that so far no evidence to support that claim has been found.
