Frank Abbott grew up in Shapleigh, Maine. He was the son of Jacob Lord Abbott and Susan Cook. [1] In 1855, he studied dentistry under Dr. J.E. Ostrander, and opened his own practice in 1858.[2] On October 26, 1859, Frank married Catherine Ann Culyer in Johnstown, New York.[3]
Frank served in the American Civil War as a lieutenant of the 115th New York Volunteer Infantry. He was captured at Harper's Ferry, West Virginia, and later released.[2]
Frank returned to dental practice after the Civil War. He served as President of the American Dental Association in 1888. He also invented various dental instruments, some of which are still in use today.[2]
Frank died on April 20, 1897 in Manhattan, New York.[4]
