Biography

Hiester Richard Hornberger was born February 1, 1924 in Trenton, New Jersey. His parents were Hiester R. Hornberger and Verena Hilton Chaney.

He was a graduate of Bowdoin College and Cornell University Medical School and became a thoracic specialist, practicing in Maine.

Dr. Richard Hornberger served in a Mobile Army Surgical Hospital 8055 which was stationed at the 38th parallel in Korea.

Richard Hornberger wrote the novel "M*A*S*H" under the pseudonym of "Richard Hooker." He served in the United States Army as a surgeon in a mobile army surgical hospital unit during the Korean War. His book was adapted into a 1970 motion picture, and into a highly successful television series. Later, he wrote a series of "After MASH" books, set in Maine and other U.S. States.

He married Priscilla S. Storer on July 6, 1946 at Augusta, Maine. Their children include the late Stephen C. Hornberger and four other children.

He passed away in 1997 in Portland, Cumberland County, Maine.
