Thomas David Whitmore Stafford Rubidge was born in 1827. He was the son of Joseph William Rubidge and Ellen Whitmore Stafford. His father died 6 months after he was born. His mother remarried when he was 9.
When Thomas was 14 or 15 he emigrated from England and joined his Uncle, Frederick Preston Rubidge a civil engineer in Ontario. Thomas also became an engineer. " It was, however, as a hydraulic engineer that Mr. Rubidge was best known, and it was the improvement of the navigation of the River St. Lawrence, between Montreal and Kingston, to which his great experience and ability were principally directed."[1]
Thomas married Emma. The 1871 census shows them with two children, Ellen, 16, and Mary 12.[2]
Thomas passed away in 1904. He is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Cornwall, Stormont, Ontario, [3] as is his wife Emma Julia Carman Rubidge (1830-1916)[4] and daughter Mary Carmen Rubidge (-1883).[5]
