Biography

John was born about 1800. He was the son of John Gray and Sarah Lewis. He attended Harrow School and the Oriel College Oxford where he received a Bachelor of Arts in 1821 and a Master of Arts in 1824. He was curate of Gayton Church Northamptonshire from 1824 to 1828. He married Susanna Reynolds and they had nine children. In 1828, upon the death of his father, he inherited Wembley Park, on the site of the modern Wembley Stadium. His mother and two sisters, Rebecca and Benigna continued to live at Wembley Park House. In 1879 he sold a 47 acre strip of the estate to the Metropolitan Railway to allow the line to extend out to Harrow. The line opened in 1880. After his death in 1887, his executors sold the estate to Sir Edward Watkin, chairman of the Metropolitan Railway.
