had a vile temper and flogged his son Fountain to such a degree that the boy ran away to sea and stayed there till his father's death left him Squire of Rougham-a place he hated from old associations- so he never went near it again and ordered the house to be blown up with gunpowder
He joined the navy and was a Lieutenant on 10 January 1771.
[2]
Two years after his father's death, Fountain married Arabella Strutt of Hampstead, a minor, on 11 December 1773 in St Martin-In-The-Fields, London, Westminster. The marriage was witnessed by his mother, Jane North. [3] The Leeds Intelligencer reports:[4]
Fountain North, Esq; of Rougham in Norfolk, a near relation of Lord North's, to Miss Arabella Strutt, of Hampstead, with a fortune of 30,000l.
Their children included:
Ann North (bap. 15 September 1774 at St Georges Hanover Square)[5]
He lived in 'The Grove' in Hampstead 1775-1811, which became known as The Admiral's House after he added a quarterdeck and cannons on the roof.
Fountain North of Hampstead Heath died in 1810 and was buried on 29 September 1810 in Ore, Sussex.[7]
