William John GABBEY was born about 1863 in County Down, Ireland. He was the son of Elizabeth Gabbey.
He married Sarah MASSEY (formerly McKEE), a widower with at least five children.
For the 1901 Ireland Census, William was living on Woodstock Road (Ormeau) in Belfast with his wife Sarah and her children from a previous marriage, as well as his mother Eliza (a widow) and his brother Alexander. [1]
He immigrated to the United States with his wife and stepchildren in 1905. They settled in Manchester, Hartford, Connecticut, United States.
The passenger manifest for RMS Teutonic, leaving Liverpool, England for New York, USA, on 15 Sep 1905 shows William GABBEY, labourer, travelling with his wife Sarah along with 24-year-old Thomas GABBEY [should be MASSEY], labourer, 22-year-old Robert GABBEY [should be MASSEY], joiner, and 3-year-old child Samuel GABBEY [should be McKEE]. For the 1910 US Census, William is living at 46 North School Street, Manchester, (as a boarder) with his wife Sarah and nephew Samuel, working as a fireman in a paper mill. [3]
His 1917 WWI draft card shows William residing at 191 Woodbridge Street, Manchester, working as a fireman.
From 1920 to 1927, William lived at 187 Woodbridge Street, Manchester (as a boarder) with his wife Sarah (until her death in 1923) and nephew Samuel, working as a fireman in a paper mill. [4]
