When Henry Esau Avery was born on 3 October 1885, in Wellington, Wellington, New Zealand, his father, Joseph Avery, was 35 and his mother, Helen Boyle, was 29. He married Alice Maud Draper in 1913, in Blenheim, Marlborough, New Zealand. They were the parents of at least 2 sons and 3 daughters. He died on 22 March 1961, in Wellington, New Zealand, at the age of 75.
A New Zealand rugby international. After playing for Wellington against New Zealand in 1910, he was added to the tour party which left for Australia shortly after. He played six matches on the tour, including the three Tests. He was a career army officer who was awarded the DSO in 1916 and rose to the rank of Brigadier.
