Biography

Charles was born in 1863 in Manhattan, New York, the third of six children born to James Bagley and Mary McGinnis.

In 1870, he was 7 years old, living with his parents in New York City with his five siblings.[1]

In 1872, when he was 9 years old and living at 32 Pike Place, NYC, his mother died. Four years later, his father died. Then, in 1878, he was found listed in a NYC Business directory as still living 32 Pike Place. [2]. The 1880 NYC business directory also lists him at 32 Pike Place. [3] Several of his siblings were also living at this address in this timeframe.

In 1880, the family moved from 32 Pike Place, NYC to 9 Prospect Place in Brooklyn, NY. The 1880 census found Charles (incorrectly named Thomas W Bagley) living on Prospect with his grandmother Rosanna McGinnis (head of household), plus 6 siblings and a cousin. [4]

The 1882 and 1883 NY business directories listed his residence as 9 Prospect Place, Brooklyn, NY. [5][6]

By 1900, Charles was now married to Jennie Kavanaugh and they were living in Waterbury Connecticut with their four sons, four daughters, grandmother Rosanna McGinnis and niece Josephine Bagley. [7] The census notes that Charles and Jennie had been married 16 years, thus a marriage date of about 1884. The census also states that Jennie was the mother of 11 children, 8 of them living.

In 1910, Charles was living in Waterbury, with his wife and 7 children, working as an insurance agent. Oldest son, John had married and was living next door the his parents with 2 children of his own. Second son, James K was living with his childless Uncle Edmond Bagley and Aunt Bertha in NYC. [8] So that left in the household 2 older sons, 4 daughters and 9 year Charles, who'd been added to the family) ; plus his niece Josephine Bagley, aged 22, and nephew John Bagley aged 23, (occupation: watch-maker).[9]. Living next door on the other side was Jennie's widowed mother, Jane Kavanaugh, aged 72, and her younger sister, Julie, aged 32.

In 1920, Charles was still living in Waterbury, the family now consisting of himself, his wife, four sons and four daughters. (Second son James K, had moved back home from NYC and first son John was living next door with his own family). [10]

He died in 1929 and is buried in Calvary Cemetery in Waterbury, New Haven County, Connecticut. . [11] (The tombstone reads: Bagley: Charles W Bagley died 1929, Jane Bagley died 1940, William C Bagley died 1936, Catherine C Kerins died Mar 24, 1982

Research Notes

  • verify that the nephew, John Bagley, the watch-maker, living with them in 1910 is in fact John Francis Bagley (1886-1924), the son of Charles's brother John A. Bagley, who had died in 1906. It looks like John Bagley shows up in two different census reports. In the other, he is living with his older brother, James in NYC. Perhaps he spent time at both residences and was thus recorded twice.
