Biography

Max was born on 4 Sep 1880 in Bremerhaven, on the North Sea coast of Germany. His parents were Karl Oscar Taubert and Marie Bertha Kuhne. He was named after his father , the registrar incorrectly entered the name on the birth certificate as "Max Oskar" instead of "Max Oscar".

On 10 Mar 1899, Max enlisted in the US Army at Trenton, in New Jersey, USA. He served as a Private in Troop E, 6th US Cavalry Regiment, during the Philippines Insurrection in 1899.

On 7 Nov 1899, Private Oscar Taubert fronted a court martial. The details of the allegations are not known. He appears to have left the US Army shortly after his court martial. His service ended on 23 Nov 1899, although it is unclear from his enlistment history whether he was discharged from service, or deserted.

On 8 Oct 1901, Max arrived in Port Adelaide, South Australia, sailing from San Francisco aboard the Star of Bengal. He was a stonemason by trade. After his arrival in Australia he always referred to himself on official documents, including his marriage certificate, as Max Karl Oscar Taubert.

On 29 May 1906, at Yorketown, on the Yorke Peninsula in South Australia, Max made an application for naturalization. His application was approved, and he swore an oath of allegiance on 8 Feb 1907, in Yorketown. On his application he stated that he had lived for three months at Kulparra, after his arrival in South Australia, and had resided in Yorketown for four years and six months since then. He was working as a labourer during that time.

On 12 Jul 1910, he married Hilda Alice Roberts at the Baptist Church in Yorketown, on the Yorke Peninsula, of South Australia.

Despite his status as a naturalized citizen, Max was interned during the First World War due to his German nationality. It is understood that he was initially interned at the Torrens Island Internment Camp in South Australia on 25 Jul 1916. He was released on parole from the Holsworthy Internment Camp at Liverpool, NSW, on 11 Jun 1918.

Max died on 5 Oct 1953, in the Royal Adelaide Hospital. He was buried on 7 Oct 1953 in the Cheltenham Cemetery.
