Biography

Richard was a Friend (Quaker)

Richard Shackleton Jr, "Son of Richard & Sarah Shackleton of Harden in ye p:rish of Bingley," was "Born ye 21st of 9th mo: 1688" (21 Nov 1688).[1] He may likely have been born at the family home, called the Shackleton House,[2] which was in the village of Harden, in the parish of Bingley and county of York (now called Yorkshire, West Riding).

His father was Richard Shackleton and his mother, Sarah Brigg. They were Quakers and "took each other in Marriage" in the Quaker manner at house of Sarah's father in the parish of Keighley on 31 December 1682.[3]

According to the Register from the Monthly Meeting of Knaresborough:

Richard Shackleton, Son of Richard Shackleton of Harden in ye p:ish of Bingley, Died ye 24th of 10th Mo: 1704 And was Buryed in Tim Mawd's Burying ground at Crossflatts near Bingley[4]

The burial site mentioned in this record has been a point of discussion:

There is also evidence of a Meeting House and burial ground in Sleningford Road, Crossflatts in the early part of the 18th century. The burial ground was owned by Timothy Maud (died 1734) and includes the burials of several members of the Maud, Lister, Taylor and Shackleton families.[5]

However, it is also important to mention how a record for the burial of Richard Shackleton Jr is included in the Register of the Parish of Bingley, All Saints Church.[6]
