Biography

Mary Harvey was baptized in St Martin by Looe,[1] in Cornwall, on 25 May 1817. Her twin brother Joseph was baptized on the same occasion. The family lived at East Looe,‍[2][3] their father was a carpenter named Edward Harvey, and their mother's name was Ann.[4]

The parents were the Edward Harvey and Anna Trevithick who were married in St Martin by Looe on 11 November 1802. The marriage record includes the information that bride and groom were both from the Borough of East Looe, and the groom was a carpenter.[5]

Joseph and Mary had three older siblings who were also baptized in St Martin by Looe. Henry Harvey, son of Edward and Ann, was baptized on 21 September 1806,[6] Edward Harvey, son of Edward and Anne, was baptized at Looe Chapel on 8 February 1809,[7] and Elizabeth Philip Harvey, daughter of carpenter Edward Harvey of East Looe and his wife Ann, was baptized on 21 August 1814 (according to the certificate of the Revd Wm Batt transmitted to Rector W. F. Michell on 22 August 1814).[8]

Census records reveal that these were not the only children in the family, but as yet no further baptism records have been found.

On census day in 1841 Joseph and Mary were living with their parents at Church End in East Looe. Joseph had followed in his father's footsteps and had become a carpenter, and there was also a young shoemaker named Nicholas Harvey in the household.

Church End, East Looe, 6 June 1841:‍[9][10][11]
Edward Harvey (60, Carpenter, Cornwall)
Ann Harvey (60, Cornwall)
Joseph Harvey (20, Carpenter, Cornwall)
Mary Harvey (20, Cornwall)
Nicholas Harvey (15, Shoemaker, Cornwall)

Note that at the 1841 census the ages of people over 15 were supposed to be rounded down to multiples of five, an instruction that was evidently observed in this case.

On census day in 1851 Edward Harvey's household did not include his daughter Mary, but did include another daughter, Ann, who was older than Mary. Also in the household was a three year old William Sloggett, grandson of Edward and Ann.

Church End, East Looe, 30 March 1850:‍[12][13]

Ann Harvey (Wife, 69, Laundress, Tywardreath)
Ann Harvey (Daughter, 39, Dress Maker, East Looe)
William Sloggett (Grandson, 3, Scholar, East Looe)

In fact the three year old William Sloggett was Mary's son. She had married William Gilbert Sloggett in Tywardreath[14] on 15 September 1845. The marriage record says that William Gilbert Sloggett was a bachelor of full age, a mariner, son of a shoemake named William Sloggett, and lived at Polkerris in Tywardreath. Mary was a spinster of full age, daughter of a carpenter named Edward Harvey, and also lived at Polkerris. Bride and groom both signed their names, and the marriage was witnessed by a George Powell Sloggett and a MaryTruscott.[15]

Changes to parish boundaries mean that the village of Polkerris is now in Fowey[16] rather than Tywardreath. It is about sixteen kilometres west of East Looe, and when Mary and William lived there it was essentially a fishing village.‍[17][18]

William and Mary had four children.

  • William Harvey Slogatt was baptized in Looe on 29 August 1847. The baptism record says that the names of his parents were William Gilbert and Mary, that the family lived at East Looe, and that William Gilbert Slogatt was a seaman.[19]
  • Joseph Wellington Slogatt was baptized in Looe on 20 May 1849. The baptism record says that the names of his parents were William and Mary, that the family lived at Fowey, and that William Slogatt was a seaman.[20]
  • According to a transcription of the Fowey baptism register[21] provided by the Cornwall Online Parish Clerks, Nicolas Harvey Slogett was baptized in Fowey on 21 January 1851. His parents were named William and Mary, the family's address was Webb Street, and William Sloggett was a mariner.[22]
  • According to a transcription of the Fowey baptism register[23] provided by the Cornwall Online Parish Clerks, George Edward Slogett was born on 1 January 1853 and baptized in Fowey on 30 January 1853. His parents were named William Gilbert and Mary, the family's address was Church Yard, and William Gilbert Sloggett was a mariner.[24]

As noted above, on census day in 1851 the eldest son, William, was with his Harvey grandparents in East Looe. Mary and her sons Joseph and Nicolas were at Webb Street in Fowey.

Mary Sloggett (Head, 34, Mariner's Wife, East Looe)
Joseph Sloggett (Son, 2, Scholar, Fowey)
Nicholas Sloggett (Son, 3 months, Fowey)

The death of Mary Sloggett was registered in the St Austell district[27] in the first quarter of 1856,[28] and the General Register Office death index[29] says that she was 39 years old. According to a transcription of the Fowey burial register[30] provided by the Cornwall Online Parish Clerks, Mary was buried on 31 January 1856, she was aged 39, and her residence at the time of her death was North Street.[31]

William Gilbert Sloggett married Ann Harvey, his deceased wife's elder sister, at Plymouth St Peter on 26 January 1857. The record of the marriage shows that William was a widower and was a mariner of Fowey, in Cornwall, and Ann was a spinster, daughter of a carpenter named Edward Harvey.[32]

On census day in 1861 William and Ann Sloggett and three of William's sons were living at Passage Street in Fowey. The record confirms that Ann was aged 49 and born in East Looe, consistent with her record at the 1851 census.

Passage Street, Fowey, 7 April 1861:‍[33][34]
William Sloggett (Head, 47, Mariner, Polkerris)
Ann Sloggett (Wife, 49, East Looe)
William Sloggett (Son, 13, East Looe)
Nicholas Sloggett (Son, 10, Scholar, Fowey)
George Sloggett (Son, 8, Scholar, Fowey)

The other son, Joseph, was on board the vessel Chase,  a 140 ton coasting schooner of Fowey, moored at Par Wharf.‍[35][36][37]
