Biography

Mary Jane (Cryer) Smith was the daughter of Elizabeth (Parham) Cryer and Joseph C. Cryer . Her paternal grands were: William Ferguson Cryer and Ann (Wilson) Cryer. Her maternal grands were: Elisha Parham/Parkam and Sarah (Smart/Swartz) Parham/Parkam. (Elisha was 3/4 Cherokee Indian and lived on the reservation and in Trail of Tears.. Mary Jane lost her father Joseph C. Cryer at a young age. It was just her mother and brother until she married Rev. William Rush Smith , a United Methodist Minister, in Morgan County, Alabama on 27 Jan 1884 by J. M. Joiner, M.G. at The Christian Church in Valhermoso Springs, Morgan County, Alabama. Mary Jane's brother-- William Ferguson Cryer and her oldest son-- Joseph Joiner Smith are buried at Mt. Tabor Cemetery, Hartselle. Alabama, along with her. (Joseph was a telephone lineman and passed in the line of duty). Mary Jane's husband Rev. William Rush Smith and their oldest daughter Francis "Fannie" Elizabeth (Smith) Nichols-Brackeen are buried at Liberty United Methodist Church Cemetery, also known as Liberty Memorial Gardens located in Booneville, Prentiss County, Mississippi. Fannie was shot and killed by an x-son-in-law. Mary Jane's middle son Albert Northrop Smith began as a city cop in Huntsville, AL. Later, He retired from the Navy and is buried in Anderson County, SC. Mary's Middle daughter, Vinnie Laura (Smith) Holmes was recorded in a history book by her grand daughter Sherry S. Brewer as being buried at Shoal Creek Cemetery in Morgan County, AL. The baby daughter Mary Lula (Smith) Coleman lived on the Indian reservation in Oklahoma until her death. She is buried in Arkansas along with her son his wife and her daughter. The baby son Raymond Clyde Smith has not been found where he is buried. •
