Biography

John Quarles, Esq.
John Quarles, Gent.
John "the elder" Quarles
John Quarles of Gray's Inn, Esq.
John Quarles, Gentleman of Gray's Inn
John Quarles of Gray's Inn, Esquire, b 1542, London England, son of John Quarles, Esq., "Citizen and Draper of London" and his father's first wife, Alice Handley of Salisbury, Wiltshire, England. [1] Original Herald's notes from 1568 documenting the Quarles Norfolk and London branch, since transcribed and published in 1963, documents his lineage:
QUARLES
William Quarles of Gresham in Norff. maryed to Emme the Doughter of Bucke of Blakney and by her hathe yssue John Quarles his eldist Sonne, [p143].
John Quarles of London maryed Alyce the doughter of Hauley (? Hanley) [sic] of Salesbery and by her hath yssue John is xxvi yers old Benedick second is xxii yers old Willm, third is xxi Anne maryed to Ryckthorne of (?) Margaret mar to Barkar of London and to his second wyfe he mar. Dorothe the doughter of Pole Dorrell of Lyleston and by her hathe yssue Edward is viii yers old John is iiii yers Judith is v yers old.
[record made] The 23rd of June (1568) [p144]
Called John "the elder" to distinguish him from his half-brother by the same name. His brothers were Benedick and William; his half-brothers (by his father's second wife): Edward, and the youngest, John (referred to as John the younger). Sisters: Margaret and Anne; half-sister (by his father's second wife) Judith. [1]
Married: Judith Bradley, daughter of (wid.) Anne Ward and __ Bradley. [2] The Visitations of Hertfordshire 1572, first reported during the lifetime of John Quarles, lists under the house of "Quarles of Cranes" the following: (in part) [3]
William Quarles of Ely [sic], co. Norf. = [no wife listed]
  • John Quarles, of London, draper o.b. 12 Nov. 1577 and wife Alice Tulley [fr. Handley]
    • John Quarles of Graye's Inne and wife (da. of __ Bradley).
John and Judith had one child by 1577 who is unnamed in the will of John's father dtd 12 Oct 1577. [4] This reference was likely to Anne, as John's sons were minors coming of age at the time he died in 1604 (based on his will dtd same). Known children were:
  • Anne b. before 1577 [m [?] Graveley, one son Thomas by 1604]
  • missing children(?) - if so, died young, not in John's will
  • Phillip b. aft 1583/bef 1604 - d. 1646 (under twenty-one in 1604)
  • James b. aft 1585 - bef 1604 (under twenty-one in 1604)
John was a member of the Drapers of London by right of paternity (handed down from father to sons). He was also a resident and practicing Barrister at Gray's Inn, an Inn of the Court, where he'd lived since his admission in 1565. [5][3] Since few records from Gray's Inn survive from this period, there is little knowledge of John's area of practice, but one may assume he was a worthy fellow since he lived his adult lifetime at Gray's Inn. [6]
John "the elder", eldest son and heir, and his child were legatees in his father's will in 1577/8. [4] After his father's affairs were settled, John petitioned the Office of Arms London to add a crest to the Quarles Merchant Mark or "ancient arms". This request was approved and the Quarles patent of arms was entered into the books. [7]
Still a resident at Gray's Inn when he died, John's wife moved to the Manor of Fisherton Anger in Wiltshire after his death.
Died: 1604/5 (will dtd 14 Feb 1604/5, probated 19 Apr 1605) Gray's Inn, London, Middlesex, England. [8]
