Birth

Marcus was born in about 1887 in Echuca, Victoria, Australia.[1]He is the son of Marcus Wakeford Dean & Elizabeth Martha Sugden

Electoral Register 1909

In 1909 Marcus was a "Labourer" living in Echuca, Victoria, Australia with his mum and dad.[2]

Military

Marcus Arthur Dean enlisted into the AIF at Melbourne on 19 September 1916 and was given the service number 3137. He declared he was born at Echuca, Victoria and was 29y 7m of age, unmarried. He nominated his father Marcus W Dean of Echuca as his next of kin. He previous employment as foreman shunter in the Victorian Railways. He was 5' 8 1/2" tall and weighed 151lbs. His chest measurements were 34-37" with medium complexion, grey eyes and black hair. His religion was C of E. He had 2 vaccination marks on his left arm, a scar on his right knee and a birthmark centre back. He was considered fit for active service at melbourne on 19 September 1916.
On 17 September 1916 Marcus was allocated to A Company 23rd battalion at Royal Park. On 7 November 1916 he was transferred to Depot Battalion and then on 28 November 1916 he was transferred to 8th Re-inforcements, 60 Battalion. He embarked for Overseas service at Melbourne on 16 December 1916 on board "Medic" and disembarked Plymouth, England on 18 February 1917 and marched in to 15th Training Battalion, Hurdcott. On 25 April 1917 he marched into No2 Command Depot, Weymouth.
Marcus embarked England for return to Australia "for Home Service" on 22 July 1917 on board HMAT A71 "Nestor" suffering "enlarged thyroid and shortening of breath". He disembarked Melbourne on 24 September 1917 and was discharged 30 October 1917.
Marcus was not eligible for the 1914-15 Star or the Victory Medal but on a date unknown hereceived his British War Medal.
On 30 November 1936 the service documents relating to Marcus were forwarded to the Deputy Commissiioner, Repatriation Commission, Melbourne.[3]

Marriage

Marcus married Mabel Janetta Barr on the 5 November 1917 in the Presbyterian Manse Church, Brunswick, Victoria, Australia.[4]

DEAN- BARR. — On the 7th November, at the Presbyterian Manse, Brunswick, by the Rov. Crockett, Marcus Arthur (late 60th Battalion) second son of Mr and Mrs M Dean, Echuca. to Mabel Jeanette, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W Barr, Davison Street, Brunswick. Present address, Seymour.[5]

Radio Interwiew 1953

Old Echucaite for Radio Interwiew: President of the Old Echucaites Association, Mr Marcus Dean will be interviewed in 3UZ's "50 and Over" program on Sunday night. Mr Dean has. for many years, held the position of special guard to the Victorian Railways Commissioners, and in that capacity has had charge of "Royal trains" previously. He was "tipped"' as guard for the Royal Train when the late King was to have visited Australia and may hold the position when Queen Elizabeth II visits Victoria next year. A native of Echuca, Mr Dean will no doubt have something to say on the Centenary of Echuca and the forthcoming "Back To," and this coupled with Ms wealth of railway experience will make interesting listening. Members of the Old Echucaites Association commend the interview to local residents as being both informative and entertaining.[9]

Death

Marcus passed away on the 7 October 1965 (DOD and place confirmed on probate record) in East Malvern, Victoria, Australia.[11]

Burial

Marcus was cremated on the 11 October 1965 at Springvale Botanical Cemetery, 600 Princes Highway, Springvale, Victoria, Australia.[12][13]

Obituary

An Echuca Man who was guard on the trains which made Royal tours in Victoria died in Melbourne recently. He was Mr Marcus Arthur Dean who was born in Echuca in 1887 and educated at the Echuca State School. After leaving school he was employed for some time by the firm of Brown and Corke in the high street one of the leading employers of the town. Leaving this firm Mr Dean gained employment with the Victoria Railways. He started with Casual work at the Echuca Wharf doing train shunting under the direction of the late Mr Adam King who was Wharf Master. He continued with this work until 1907 when he was transferred to Woomelang to help handle the water trains which were relieving the severe drought conditions in that district. His next position was at Seymour where he remained for some considerable time, obtaining his guard’s certificate in 1912. During the following years, he attained the position of leading guard for Victorian Railway passenger trains. He was the guard chosen for the touring Governmental and Commissioner’s trains and for the touring train of Lord and Lady Baden Powell. He was also the guard associated with the late Sir Harold Clapp in the launching of the Spirit of Progress. After 48 years of service his retirement was due in 1952 but at the request of the Commissioner’s he was asked to continue for an extra 18 months to act as guard for the royal tour in 1954, during which he visited Echuca with the Royal Train. He was an active member of the Old Echucaites Association as it was then known over many years and was president on three occasions. He held the position when the Association visited Echuca for the centenary celibations of the town in 1953 and continued his active work as a committee member until prevented from doing so by illness. The Reverend H.W.G. Nicholas a former curate Christ Church, Church of England conducted the service at the funeral parlors and at the Springvale Crematorium. In his service at the funeral parlors, Mr Nicholas spoke of his close friendship with Mr Dean’s family and friends would mourn his loss. He will always be remembered for his kindly and brotherly friendship, geniality and warm heartedness. His was the grace and charm that is the adornment of a man that loves and fears his God Mr Nichols said. Mr Dean married in 1917, his wife a Maryborough girl Mabel Barr, who survives him, together with a daughter Myra, a son-in-law and two grandchildren, Rosalind and Philip. Mrs Dean will continue to live at 11 Wynyeh Street, Darling S.E.5.[14]

The probate for Marcus was granted on the 17 Jan 1966.[15]
