Biography

Edith Dorothea Mogel was born 21 Jan 1915 in Elmira, New York, a daughter of Daniel Mogel and Wilhemina “Mina” Wilson Mogel. [1]

The 1915 state census for Elmira Ward 01, Chemung County, New York found this family at 204 Guinnip Avenue: Daniel E. “Mogel” (head), age 30, manager of a public company; Mina E. Mogel (wife), 24, “housework”; daughter Bessie, 5; daughter Marian Mogel, 2; Edith D. Mogel, 3 months; mother-in-law Minnie Wilson, 53. [2] See an image of the house at 204 Guinnip Avenue.

The federal census of 1920, listed for Elmira, Chemung County, New York on 7 January, found this family: Daniel Mogel (head), age 36, born in Russia and emigrated in 1898, language Hebrew; wife Wilmina, 28 and born in Pennsylvania; daughter Bessie, 9; daughter Miriam, 6; daughter Dorothea Mogel, 4 years and 11 months; son Edward Mogel, 3 years and 1 month. The New York State census of 1925 (dated 1 June), listed for the Tuckahoe village of Eastchester, Westchester County, New York, found this family at 283 Marbledale Road: Daniel Mogul (head), age 39, sales manager for a paper [sic?] company; wife Mina, 34, housewife; daughter Bessie, 15, in school; daughter Miriam, 12, in school; daughter Dorothea, 10, in school; son Edward, 8, in school. All were citizens. [4]

The federal census of 1930, listed for the city of Mount Vernon, Westchester County, New York on 2 April, found this family residing in an apartment at 425 Bedford Avenue (see image): Daniel Mogel (head), age 42 (age 21 at first marriage) born in Russia, employed as a sales manager for greeting cards, language Russian; wife Mina E. Mogel, 39 (age 17 at first marriage); daughter Bessie, 20, born in Pennsylvania; daughter Miriam E. Mogel, 16, born in New York; daughter Dorothea E. Mogel, 15, born in New York; and son Eduard D. Mogel, 13, born in New York. They were renting their apartment at a cost of ninety-five dollars per month. [5]

In 1933, the yearbook of AB Davis High School, Mount Vernon, included a portrait photo of “Edith Dorothea Mogel”, with a note indicating that she intended to study further at the Katherine Gibbs School. She was president of Alpha Tau Delta, and participated in Two Year Honor, the Business Board of “Hi-News”, Ca et La, Archery, Basketball, the Mother and Daughter Dinner Committee, and the Press Club. [6]

On 12 Feb 1934, Dorothea E. Mogel married Burnhart Glassgold. An Elmira Star-Gazette newspaper article reported the location for the event as Mount Vernon, Westchester County, New York. [7] However, their marriage was included in the “Index of Marriages in New Jersey” which referenced Volume 13, page 473. Names were Edith and Burnhart Glassgold. [8]

In April 1935, the couple resided in Rochester, Monroe County, New York. (See the next paragraph.)

The federal census of 1940, enumerated on April 11 for the Embassy Hotel in New York City found this couple: Burnhart Glassgold, age 34, and Dorothea, age 25, listed among the guests. His occupation was general manager of hardware manufacturing. Both indicated that on 1 April 1935 they had resided in Rochester, Monroe County, New York.[9]

On 24 October 1940, when Burnhart registered for the military draft at local board 24, 180 Amsterdam Avenue, he and Dorothea were still residing at the Embassy Hotel, apartment 809, 70th Street and Broadway, New York, and his employer was You-Need-A-Pak-Prod Corporation, 135 Plymouth Street, Brooklyn, New York. Registrar Linnie Ballenger noted that Burnhart’s height was 5’ 10”, his weight 150 pounds, his eyes gray, hair brown, and complexion light brown. [10]

Their daughter Suzanne Glassgold was born 25 or 26 November 1940 in Mount Vernon.[11]

The 1950 federal census of Aurora, Kane County, Illlinois found this family residing on Ingleside Avenue: Burnhart “Glassglow” (head), age 44, born in New York, and employed in sales related to Automatic Manufacturing; wife Dorothea, age 35, born in New York; and daughter Suzanne, age 9, born in New York. [12]

In 1952, when the city directory was collected for Aurora, Illinois, Burnhart and Dorothea resided at 346 Ingleside Avenue, and he was employed as sales manager for the Stoner Manufacturing Corporation. (Daughter Suzanne was not mentioned but may have been present also.) [13]

In 1961, when the city census was taken for Fairway, Kansas, the Glassgold family resided at 5810 Elmonte Street: Burnhart, Dorothea, and “Sue”, age 20. [14]

In 1962, when the city directory was collected for Mission, Kansas, Burnhart and Dorothea still resided at 5810 Elmonte Street, and Burnhart was Vice-President of the Vendo Company, Kansas City. [15]

Burnhart Glassgold died 27 November 1986 in Lampe, Stone County, Missouri. [16] [17]

Dorothea Edith Mogel Glassgold died 25 Nov 2015, at the age of 100, in Aurora, Illinois.[18] [19][20]
