Clara was born in autumn 1869, the first daughter and second child of William Pinder Wells and Ann Ottway.[1]
Father William's duties as Sergeant in the Army Service Corp had the family relocate from Clara's birthplace of Aldershot to Plumstead, adjacent to the military town of Woolwich. in 1871 they are found living at 36 Frederick Place.[2] Brothers Graham Charles and William James were added to the family, but both died in infancy. The family had moved into the barracks at Woolwich, where two more brothers were added: Henry John and Arthur Frederick.
Father William left the military, and around 1877 the family relocated to the north side of the Thames, living at Bromley-by-Bow, Middlesex. Sisters Gertrude and Jane Louisa (who died in infancy) arrived prior to the 1881 census, which found the family of seven living at 2 Prestwick Road. Father William was listed as (Chelsea Pensioner) Wharf Clerk Unemployed, and uncle Courtenay was also found in the household. Just a few weeks after the census was collected, sister Winifred Kate was born.
The family relocated a modest distance east of the River Lea, to the developing suburb of Forest Gate, Essex, where they lived at 29 Palmerston Road. Here the final three siblings were added to the family: sister Mabel and brothers William Graham and Reginald Leopold.
At age 21 in autumn 1891, Clara married 23-year-old Albert John Rolfe at West Ham.[3]
The family added son Albert Courtenay and daughter Gladys Muriel. The 1901 census found the group of four living at 13 Mansfield in nearby Ilford. The family composition had not changed for the 1911 census, which found them still in Ilford, now living at 13 Belgrave Road. After retirement Clara and Albert moved a short distance to [1], living at 264 Main Road in 1939.
