Biography
Gertie was born in spring 1878, the second daughter and seventh child of William Wells and Ann Ottway.[1]
The family had only recently moved to Bromley-by-Bow, Middlesex. Sister Jane Louisa had both arrived and passed away prior to the 1881 census, which found the family of seven living at 2 Prestwick Road. Father William was listed as (Chelsea Pensioner) Wharf Clerk Unemployed, and uncle Courtenay was also found in the household. Just a few weeks after the census was collected, sister Winifred Kate was born.
The family relocated a modest distance east of the River Lea, to the developing suburb of Forest Gate, Essex, where they lived at 29 Palmerston Road. Here the final three siblings were added to the family: sister Mabel and brothers William Graham and Reginald Leopold.
Eldest sibling Pinder Courtenay joined the merchant marine in 1885, leaving sister Clara Ann the eldest in the household in the 1891 census, but she married later that same year. Brother Arthur Frederick followed the seagoing path in autumn 1892, but was killed in early 1894 while on his first voyage. Undoubtedly the family were occupied in the aftermath, which taxed father William, who passed away in early 1901.
At age 32 in summer 1910, Gertie married 26-year-old Singapore solicitor Cyril Blair Cooper at Hornchurch.[2][3] The pair lived as a married couple in Singapore for over a decade, but by the time Cyril passed away in 1934, Gertie had returned to England.
Gertrude Cooper passed away in summer 1944.[4]
