Sir William George Watson, of Sulhampstead House, near Heading, was one of the founders, and for many years chairman, of Maypole Dairy Company, Ltd.
He was the 1st Baronet of Sulhamstead.[1][2]
William was born on Boxing Day 1861 in Warwickshire, the second child of a well-to-do farmer who owned property near Coventry. By his twenties, William had become a butter merchant. He later developed a trade in margarine, which led to the founding, with the help of his brothers, Charles and Alfred, of the Maypole Dairy Company. By the turn of the century there were more than 100 Maypole Dairy Company shops in England. The business then spread to Scotland and Wales. He became rich. [3]
William married twice. His first wife was Mary Watson in 1887. She was dead within a year. His second wife was Bessie Atkinson, a schoolteacher, whom he married in 1894. He and his second wife were the parents of three children: Florence, Norman, and Victor (Peter).
In 1910, William purchased Sulhamstead House. He was granted a baronetcy by the Crown in 1912.[4]
